Week 9: Floral. Blue Floral Dress

This blue floral dress by Walter Baker is a perfect example of a floral print that is "girly and pretty," but also bold, sexy and surprisingly daring. The print is very bright and eye-catching, but what I love the most about this dress is the high slits and lace-up front (no bra days!).

I kept the styling subdued with minimal makeup and a simple hairstyle with two tiny braids in the back. The look was not too overwhelming, and it was rather comfortable for a long walk in NYC with friends.

Ulia Ali in Walter Baker Floral Dress

It is still quite chilly in New York, but I couldn't wait to show you a few of my new favourite spring dresses! So this week is dedicated to flowers of all kinds, and especially to floral prints. Let’s start with this gorgeous Walter Baker dress featuring a very sexy open back.

The photographs were taken at one of my favourite buildings in the city‒  - The New York Public Library.

Week 6: Marie Antoinette. My French Queen Inspired Look

Ulia Ali as Marie Antoinetter

Every week when I am creating new pastiches or looks inspired by famous historical figures, I wonder how to make them recognisable, yet not too costume-y. I wanted my Marie Antoinette look to be beautiful, memorable, but still wearable.

I opted for this beautiful Diana gown from Lurelly with pastel embroidered flowers and some fancy jewellery, including my matching ring and a bracelet with amethysts. I was thinking of trying Marie's iconic pouf hair with baby powder sprinkled all over my brown hair, but decided to keep the look more XXI-st century appropriate :)

Week 2: War & Peace. Russian Winter Fairytale

Russian winter fairytale love war and peace peasant look Walter Baker

I have created several War & Peace inspired fashion looks, especially the ones that I could imagine Natasha Rostova wearing if she would magically appear in our era.

Here is my first look, the one I call 'Russian Winter Fairytale'. It has a very soft, feminine touch to it. The outfit is a little bit peasant-y, but still very rich in fabric and somehow noble; something Natasha would wear when she and other Rostovs visited her uncle in the village of Mihkaylovka. There, in his wooden hut, surrounded by peasants and dancing to a Balalaika, Natasha wonderfully connects with the spirit of simple Russian men and women.

Of course such open shoulders are a little bit more risky than what women usually wore during the beginning of the 19th century. Additionally, women of the aristocracy during that era would wear their hair up. However, films often disregard historical facts, and I wanted to show more of Natasha's closeness to simple folk by braiding my hair in this look.
