Week 12. Gossip Girl. How Blair and Serena would wear a Burberry trench

When Ben and I were in Park City last weekend, my father-in-law shook his head judgmentally when he saw me watching the beginning of Blair and Chuck's romance on TV. "What?," I said. "It’s just research for my blog!"

I wanted to re-watch one of my favourite TV shows from my younger years― Gossip Girl, and I found the perfect excuse for it! So here we are starting the 12th week of Pastiche.today―  the Gossip Girl Week.

For the first outfit post I wanted to show you how you can style the same Burberry trench coat in two different ways. The Blair Waldorf way, of course, includes her signature headband, which brightly contrasts the trench, a dress, a pair of flats, and a perfectly matching classic Lady Dior bag.

For channelling Serena Van der Woodsen, opt for skinny jeans and high heels for an overall hot, yet effortless vibe.

Whose style interpretation you prefer? Blair's or Serena's?

Let me know in the comments and stay tuned for more outfit posts and styles from our two favourite TV show characters!

Week 11: Instagram Babe. New York When It Sizzles

Two piece dress is one of the biggest style trends seen on Insta-models and seems like it is not going to disappear out of our fashion radars any time soon. I have quite a few two piece dresses myself, that I love wearing for a night out with girls or a special date with my husband.

To be honest with you, I feel much more comfortable wearing such tight sexy clothing in Miami or LA. I certainly attracted too much attention shooting this bright turquoise dress on the streets of New York City. Oh well, I am just preparing everyone for a very HOT summer.

Had to get rid of so many nice photos just because some creepy people lurking on the background. Funny!

Week 9: Floral. Blue Floral Dress

This blue floral dress by Walter Baker is a perfect example of a floral print that is "girly and pretty," but also bold, sexy and surprisingly daring. The print is very bright and eye-catching, but what I love the most about this dress is the high slits and lace-up front (no bra days!).

I kept the styling subdued with minimal makeup and a simple hairstyle with two tiny braids in the back. The look was not too overwhelming, and it was rather comfortable for a long walk in NYC with friends.

Week 6: Marie Antoinette. My casual 'The French Queen' Look

Ulia Ali blogger

Did you know that Marie Antoinette hada faux peasant village built for herself and her friends at Versailles? Her rustic retreat was called the Hameau de la Reine and it featured 11 cottages surrounding a large lake, pretty gardens, a watermill, a dairy and animals. Marie and her friends would wear simple dresses, dance and play the role of peasants. The people of France saw this as a mockery of their poverty and it added fuel to the general discontent with the Queen.

Imagining Marie and her ladies-in-waiting dressing up as peasants and singing songs in the field inspired me to create this casual look. It is adapted to our century, so don't be surprised seeing me in white jeans. I added little details evocative of Marie: a cute ribbon on my neck, baby blue 'peasant' style off-shoulder top and soft wavy hair.

Week 5: Star Wars. Princess Leia in NYC

Star Wars themed photoshoot. Ulia Ali as Princess Leia.

Princess Leia (or shall we call her General Leia after the Force Awakens?) is one of the most iconic characters in film history. Her sultry slave costume look is still on my list of 'Halloween outfits to wear' and her hairstyles are hard to forget (and recreate too!)

The most memorable Leia's hairstyle is side buns, and they were apparently inspired by photographs of native American women. These ones in particular:

I wanted to try 'Leia's side buns' hairstyle for a long time, and I finally managed to find great video tutorials and got a help from a friend Agnes. And I am so happy with the results!

At the beginning I was planning to wear a white turtleneck dress, similar to what Leia wore in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, however, I thought it would be more challenging and fun if I wear something Star Wars inspired, but more appropriate for New York and our galaxy :)
